Various Positive Achievements of IDXCarbon in Q1 2025

Throughout the first quarter of 2025, Indonesia Carbon Exchange (IDXCarbon) has recorded achievements in various aspects. On 20 January 2025, the Ministry of Environment/Environmental Management Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (KLH/BPLH), Indonesia Financial Services Authority (OJK), and Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) inaugurated the First International Trading of Indonesian Carbon Units through IDXCarbon at IDX Main Hall. This inauguration is one of the milestones in the implementation of carbon trading in Indonesia, which is expected to be the starting point for creating collaboration for the implementation of foreign carbon trading.

In the inauguration event, there were 5 emission reduction projects from the energy sector that received authorization for international trading, namely (1) Pengoperasian Pembangkit Listrik Baru Berbahan Bakar Gas Bumi PLTGU Priok Blok 4, (2) Konversi Dari Pembangkit Single Cycle Menjadi Combined Cycle (Add On) PLTGU Grati Blok 2, (3) Pengoperasian Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Air Minihidro (PLTM) Gunung Wugul, (4) Pengoperasian Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Gas Bumi Baru PLTGU PJB Muara Karang Blok 3, dan (5) Konversi dari Pembangkit Single Cycle menjadi Combined Cycle Blok 2 PLN NP UP Muara Tawar.

During the first quarter of 2025, a total of 690,675 tCO2e carbon units were traded through IDXCarbon. This number exceeds the total volume of carbon trading transactions in 2024 as well as 2023, nailing IDXCarbon as one of the carbon exchanges with the largest number of transactions in the region. In 2024, a total of 413,764 tCO2e are transacted via IDXCarbon, while in 2023 (started from IDXCarbon’s launching at 26 September up to end of December) total transactions reached 494,254 tCO2e.

Currently, there are 7 technology-based emission reduction projects being traded, with a total of 2,203,119 tCO2e available to be traded. There was also an increase in IDXCarbon Service Users by 22% to 111 Users throughout the first quarter of 2025. These statistics generally provide optimism on the prospects of carbon trading in Indonesia.

IDXCarbon, in coordination with the OJK and relevant Ministries/ Institutions, continuously develop Indonesia carbon trading ecosystem to put Indonesia as a focal point in regional and global carbon market. IDXCarbon will put an effort in improving liquidity of the carbon market both from demand and supply side, in domestic and international markets, while ensuring compliance with government policies and regulations. By establishing collaborations with various stakeholders, Indonesia carbon market is expected to grow and contribute significantly to achieving national emission reduction goals.
